I køle- og fryseprocesser anvendes den høje fordampningstemperatur i flydende nitrogen til hurtig afkøling og frysning af fødevarer.
I emballage til fødevarer, anvendes nitrogen til at eliminere oxygen i atmosfæren, og dermed minimere væksten af mikroorganismer og oxidering af fedt.
I lagring og aftapning af vin og olier, anvendes nitrogen som en inert gas for at fjerne oxidering og forlænge holdbarheden af produkterne.
