The official ceremony of AGA and Linde’s research facility was opened by Vice Minister in the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Kristine Gramstad. She informed of the potentials available for the fish farming industry: - There is a potential increase of six fold in fish farming by 2050, but it requires sustainable farming and research.
- We are pleased that AGA and Linde has chosen Ålesund, Norway, and for their investment in aquaculture, Gramstad says.
- There has been a tremendous growth in the aquaculture industry in recent years, thanks to the skilled expertise we have in this country. But I will also stress that regulation of the industry contributed to the success. It is important that fish health is safeguarded and to limit the risk of spreading disease. I hope and believe that this research facility can contribute to this.
- There is a huge potential both in Norway and elsewhere in the world, and the research and development we do here in Ålesund, will give us vital importance both nationally and globally, says Tore-Jakob Reite, Site Manager for the AGA Innovation Centre for Aquaculture and Water treatment. - It is a great recognition for Norwegian expertise that this centre is established in Ålesund. We have unique technology and knowledge, which is a crucial for success. AGA is the only gas company that focuses on this level, and is a key player for Norway as the world's largest salmon producer.
World-leading research
In addition to Vice Minister Gramstad, the Mayor of Ålesund, Bjørn Tømmerdal and Linde’s top management was present.
Norway is a world leader when it comes to research on fish farming, says Volker Haeckh, Head of Global Process Industries Linde.
It is natural for us to invest in the further development if we want to succeed in this area, says Haeckh.
Ålesund’s Mayor Bjørn Tømmerdal in turn promised to praise this plant when he goes to Berlin in October and visits the President of Der Deutsche Bundestag.
As the largest fishing town in Scandinavia, it is only natural, he says.
- Norwegian expertise in aquaculture is amongst the best in the world, says Reite. - We export solutions, products and expertise built on 25 years of research and development. AGA oxygenation solutions are an important input in the future of sustainable aquaculture.
It's mainly about oxygen. The supply of oxygen is essential for the welfare, growth and utilization of the fish. - Proper oxygenation is the key factor for modern farming, Reite says. This applies to the growth and health, production and profitability. AGA oxygenation solutions provide optimal water environment in farms.
Fish on land - global potential for Norwegian expertise
The best tank environment on land is essential for the fish to grow and thrive before it is put into the plants in the water. Longer time on land set new requirements for equipment and facilities, and also helps to reduce waste problems in the lake.
There is a huge potential for Norwegian expertise in aquaculture in the future, he adds.
With strong population growth and global food production under pressure, aquaculture is one of several solutions in order to increase food production. Wild fishing levels in the ocean are being stretched, and an increase is only possible through modern aquaculture. We are expecting a significant increase in fish farming on land in the next few years, says Tore-Jakob Reite in AGA.
